Meet Bill
The Corruption within the 2006 election
In 2006, Bill Hunt challenged two-term incumbent Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona. Bill Hunt was motivated by the rampant mismanagement and corruption at the top levels of the department. Bill Hunt won the endorsement of the men and women of the sheriff’s department over Sheriff Mike Carona and received nearly 100,000 votes from the citizens of Orange County. Subsequently, many of the accusations and allegations from the 2006 campaign were proven true when Carona was indicted on corruption charges.
Carona’s resignation resulted in an appointment process. The appointment process was handled by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Three of five supervisors chose the current, appointed sheriff Sandra Hutchens to fill the remainder of Carona’s term until the June 2010 primary.
